The book primarily aims to elucidate various concepts of quantum mechanics and provides an exposure to modern applications of quantum mechanics ranging from the use of squeezed states in the detection of gravitational waves (in the famous LlGO experiment) to quantum computers placed in the cloud. It also aims to make teaching of quantum mechanics interesting by providing a clear prescription for performing quantum-mechanical experiments in the classroom by using a cloud-based quantum computer. Such a prescription had never been provided earlier. Making it more exciting and complete, a lucid description of the historical development of quantum mechanics is provided along with the conceptually clearer mathematical and physical description of the textbook type standard problems of quantum mechanics. Further, issues associated with the foundations of quantum mechanics are also discussed in the chapter dedicated to the Aharonov-Bohm effect.

About the Editors:

Dr. Anirban Pathak is a theoretical physicist. He did his Ph.D. from Visva Bharati, Santiniketan, India. Subsequently, he was a post-doctoral fellow at Freie University, Berlin. He joined Jaypee Institute of Information Technology (JIlT), Noida in 2002 and at present he is a Professor of Physics at JIlT. He is actively involved in teaching and research related to several aspects of quantum optics and quantum information. He is a member of The National Academy of Sciences, India (NASI) and several other professional bodies. He is a visiting scientist at Palacky University, Czech Republic. He has written a few books including an introductory textbook on quantum communication and computation. He is also a recipient of the 2017 Shri O.P. Bhasin Award in the field of Electronics and Information Technology.

Dr. Ajoy Ghatak is currently Professor Meghnad Saha Fellow of NASI (The National Academy of Sciences, India). He received his B.Sc. from Agra College, M.Sc. from Delhi University and Ph.D. from Cornell University. After a short tenure as a Research Associate at Brookhaven National Laboratory, he joined the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi in 1966. Professor Ghatak has research interests in fiber optics and quantum mechanics. He has authored several books including his undergraduate text on OPTICS which has been translated to Chinese and Persian; the 6th edition of this book has been published recently. His other books include Quantum Mechanics: Theory and Applications (co-authored with Professor S. Lokanathan), Fiber Optics, Lasers, Optical Electronics (all three co-authored with Professor K. Thyagarajan) and a popular book on Albert Einstein: The Story of a Genius. He is a recipient of the 2008 SPIE Educator Award in recognition of his unparalleled global contributions to the field of fiber optics research and his tireless dedication to optics education worldwide…; the 2003 Esther Hoffman Beller Award (instituted by The Optical Society of America) in recognition of his outstanding contributions to optics education ... ; the International Commission for Optics 1998 Galileo Galilei Award and also the CSIR 1979 S.S.
