About the Editors:

Susan English, OSB, EdD, MCC, is cofounder and codirector of the Professional Coach Certification Program in the Palumbo Donahue School of Business at Duquesne University and has a private practice as a life and leadership coach. Susan has over 30 years of experience as a teacher, college professor, and supervisor and is an award-winning student mentor. She has worked in public, private, and prison school settings and has been an active leader in state and local professional and nonprofit organizations. Susan is a past president of the International Coach Federation (ICF) Pittsburgh and holds a doctorate in education from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. She has additional training in both internal family systems and emotional intelligence. As a coach, Susan’s special interests are to improve communication skills, grow leadership abilities, increase emotional intelligence, overcome negative self-talk, enhance life balance, and triumph over roadblocks while finding joy and fulfillment in the process. She is a Benedictine Sister, daughter, mother, grandmother, and social justice advocate.

Janice Manzi Sabatine, PhD, PCC, is president of Avanti Strategies, LLC, a firm specializing in executive, leadership, and career coaching for academic physicians and scientists. She is a certified executive coach through the Pennsylvania State University Smeal College of Business and earned a BS in chemistry from the University of Notre Dame and a PhD in biochemistry from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. With over 30 years of experience in biomedical research, she has been influential in the publication of over 50 journal articles and book chapters and nearly 30 funded grant applications. Recognizing the need among her technically trained peers for stronger leadership and interpersonal skills, Dr. Sabatine trained as an executive coach. In this role, she has helped numerous academic, scientific, and healthcare professionals become stronger, more effective leaders. A researcher by training, Dr. Sabatine relies on evidence-based methodologies to support her coaching and coach training activities. She is currently a recipient of an Institute of Coaching research grant to study the impact of a coaching-based career course supplemented with external coaching, entitled “The Impact of Developmental Coaching on Career Adaptability Capacity and Moderators of Sustained Career Development among Graduate Students.” She is codirector of training in the Professional Coach Certification Program in the Palumbo Donahue School of Business at Duquesne University and is a past president of the Pittsburgh chapter of the International Coach Federation (ICF).

Philip Brownell, MDiv, PsyD, PCC, is a clinical psychologist licensed in North Carolina, Oregon, and Idaho. He has been in practice since 1998, but his experience working with people in various capacities, including full-time Christian ministry, dates to 1968, when he was a neuropsychiatric technician with the U.S. Navy. Dr. Brownell completed 6 years of formal training in gestalt psychotherapy, has written several books on the subject, and is involved in the global movement to establish a research tradition for gestalt therapy. He also completed the International Coach Federation (ICF)-accredited professional coach training program at Duquesne University. Currently, he works as the only psychologist for an integrated healthcare organization in southern Idaho, where he lives with his wife, 12 cats, one dog, two guitars, and a stack of books. At night from the deck around their house he can hear the roar of Shoshone Falls rising out of the Snake River Canyon.
