“Finally a book about the Rorschach for use in everyday clinical practice. Assessment Using the Rorschach Inkblot Test presents a welcome antidote to generations of cumbersome scoring systems. Written in an accessible style, it provides cogent instruction on administration, person-centered interpretation, and communicating findings in test reports.”

—Lon Gieser, PhD, Independent Practice, Upper Montclair, NJ, and Editor, Evocative Images: The Thematic Apperception Test and the Art of Projection

“Choca and Rossini have developed a timely and time efficient Rorschach technique that is clear, concise, and accessible.“

—Gary Groth-Marnat, PhD, ABPP, ABAP, Pacifica Graduate Institute, Santa Barbara, CA

“In casual, lighthearted, and easy-to-read prose, Choca and Rossini rely on their years of clinical acumen with the Rorschach to propose modifications of the two dominant systems in use today to help clinicians simplify administration, coding, and interpretation and find “the person behind the scores.”

—Gregory J. Meyer, PhD, Professor, Department of Psychology, University of Toledo, Toledo, OH

“This is an important book for all assessment psychologists. The most critical feature is that it will make any professional reader think carefully about the Rorschach. It is a major step in Rorschach research.”

—Barry Ritzler, PhD, Professor Emeritus, Long Island University, Brooklyn, NY, and Past President of the Society for Personality Assessment

“Good things come in small packages. This is a fecund, low Lambda gem: brief but richly variegated, economical yet erudite, utterly saturated with blended wisdom. Unafraid of rocking the boat, necessarily wrestling with Cronbach’s Ghost (achieving a partial takedown), Choca and Rossini present an alternate, abbreviated four-card procedure (nicknamed “Herm,” of course). This is a go-to guide for anyone who wishes to give the Rorschach a 21st-century makeover. Choca and Rossini will enliven your Erlebnistyp!

—Charles A. Peterson, PhD, ABAP, LP, Independent Practice, St. Paul, MN

The Rorschach is perhaps the most famous psychological instrument of all time, yet its purpose and utility are often misunderstood. In this introductory guide, authors James Choca and Edward Rossini demonstrate the Rorschach’s value to modern psychology as an essential clinical tool for assessing clients’ thought processes.

Choca and Rossini translate their expertise into fundamental strategies for administering, scoring, and interpreting the test, as well as writing reports. They carefully examine the Rorschach’s many variables – both individually and in combination with one another – offering possible interpretations for various scores.

In addition to surveying the two primary Rorschach scoring systems – the Comprehensive System and the Rorschach Performance Assessment System – the authors propose their own innovative system, the Basic Rorschach, which streamlines the assessment process by analyzing only the most clinically meaningful variables.

A versatile, four-step framework bolstered by advanced interpretation strategies helps clinicians look beyond a client’s scores to more deeply understand the person behind them.

The authors also propose a shorter, four-card Rorschach test that is more accessible in some situations, yet still clinically valid.
